Astoria is a somewhat small city located in the state of Oregon. With a population of 10,182 people and six associated neighborhoods, Astoria is the 56th largest community in Oregon. Much of the housing stock in Astoria was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic cities in the country.
Also of interest is that Astoria has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 13.08% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
One of the benefits of Astoria is that there is very little traffic. The average commute to work is 19.18 minutes, which is substantially less than the national average. Not only does this mean that the drive to work is less aggravating, but noise and pollution levels are lower as a result.
The education level of Astoria citizens is substantially higher than the typical US community, as 31.65% of adults in Astoria have at least a bachelor's degree.
The per capita income in Astoria in 2022 was $38,742, which is upper middle income relative to Oregon and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $154,968 for a family of four. However, Astoria contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
Astoria is a very ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Astoria home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Astoria residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Astoria also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 13.27% of the city’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Astoria include German, English, Irish, Norwegian, and Finnish.
The most common language spoken in Astoria is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Polish.
