Homosassa profile

Living in Homosassa

Homosassa is a very small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Florida. With a population of 2,299 people and eight associated neighborhoods, Homosassa is the 369th largest community in Florida.

And if you like science, one thing you'll find is that Homosassa has lots of scientists living in town - whether they be life scientists, physical scientists (like astronomers), or social scientists (like geographers!). So, if you're scientific-minded, you might like it here too.

A relatively large number of people in Homosassa telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 12.34% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Another notable thing is that Homosassa is an extremely popular vacation destination. A significant portion of the population is seasonal. During the vacation season, the town experiences a large influx of people who take up residence in second homes they own in the area. As the vacation season ends, the population drops again, leaving behind a substantially quieter and smaller town.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Homosassa has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Homosassa has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Homosassa than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Homosassa may be for you.

One of the nice things about Homosassa is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

Homosassa is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

The overall education level of Homosassa citizens is substantially higher than the typical US community, as 29.21% of adults in Homosassa have at least a bachelor's degree, and the average American community has 21.84%.

The per capita income in Homosassa in 2022 was $45,481, which is upper middle income relative to Florida, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $181,924 for a family of four. However, Homosassa contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
