Living in Carthage

Carthage is a very small town located in the state of North Carolina. With a population of 2,908 people and three associated neighborhoods, Carthage is the 261st largest community in North Carolina. Carthage has seen a significant amount of newer housing growth in recent years. Quite often, new home construction is the result of new residents moving in who are middle class or wealthier, attracted by jobs, a healthy local economy, or other amenities as they leave nearby or far away areas for greener pastures. This seems to be the case in Carthage, where the median household income is $55,469.00.

There are quite a few people in the armed forces living in Carthage, and when you visit or drive around town, you will see military people in and out of uniform, shopping, enjoying life, and being part of the community.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 11.24% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Carthage has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Carthage has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Carthage than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Carthage may be for you.

The education level of Carthage citizens, measured as those with bachelor's degrees or advanced degrees, is similar to the national average for all American cities and towns. 20.60% of adults 25 and older in Carthage have a college degree.

The per capita income in Carthage in 2022 was $31,044, which is middle income relative to North Carolina and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $124,176 for a family of four. However, Carthage contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
